Significance of Constipation Awareness:
Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal condition affecting individuals of all ages, with approximately 20% prevalence in the general population and 29.6% in children. It is more common among the elderly, particularly elderly women who experience severe constipation two to three times more frequently than their male counterparts. In India, 22% of adults suffer from constipation, with 59% reporting severe constipation and 27% experiencing constipation associated with comorbidities, according to the 2018 Gut Health Survey.
Types of Constipation:
- Normal-Transit Constipation: Stool traverse through the colon and frequency may be normal, but individuals still feel constipated.
- Slow-transit constipation (Common in Women): Reduced colonic motor activity and diminished responses following a meal and morning awakening.
- Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Inability to relax and coordinate pelvic floor muscles for a bowel movement.
Causes of Constipation:
Several factors contribute to constipation, including:
- Low-fiber diet
- Caffeine abuse
- Alcohol overuse
- Medications
- Endocrine disorders (hypothyroid)
- Neurologic diseases (neuropathy)
- Psychological issues
While pediatric patients often benefit from medical treatment, constipation in adults tends to have a poor prognosis, significantly impacting the quality of life. Factors associated with a worse prognosis include female gender, occurrence in geriatric patients, a longer time between symptom onset and treatment initiation, and prolonged colonic transit time.
